What does "karat" actually mean?
Karat measures gold purity out of 24 parts. 24k is pure gold; 18k is 18 parts gold to 6 parts other metals (75% pure); 14k is roughly 58% pure; 10k is roughly 42% pure. Jewelry is typically 10k–18k for durability, while bullion coins and bars are almost always 22k or 24k.
What does ".999 fine" mean on a bar or coin?
".999 fine" means the gold is 99.9% pure, the standard for most investment-grade bullion bars and coins. Some sovereign coins, like the Canadian Maple Leaf, are struck even finer at .9999.
Coins vs. bars — what's the difference?
Sovereign coins (Krugerrand, Maple Leaf, Eagle) carry a government guarantee of weight and purity and are widely recognized worldwide. Bars are produced by private and government mints in a range of sizes and are valued purely on weight and purity.
Do you buy broken or outdated gold jewelry?
Yes. Condition doesn't matter for jewelry gold the way it does for coins — Peter assesses it in person based on karat and weight.

General education only — not a valuation. Gold moves with the market daily, so every item is assessed by Peter in person before any figure is discussed.
